This photo of the Tipton Reservoir dam was taken off the edge of State Route 4023 and graphically demonstrates its depth. While its width at the dam is narrower than the Bellwood Reservoir, it’s noticably deeper. The relative nearness to the roadway of the wide spillway makes the heavy runoff of spring quite a noisy affair. Each “step” or row of stone is approximately three feet high. Photographed in late summer, there’s little water left to escape over the spillway after the water treatment plant immediately downstream gets its share via an underground pipeline.
