Us STREET LAMPS A perusal of the first minute books of the borough council discloses some interesting facts. One object of much attention in those days had to do with street lighting. The lighting at that time was done with kerosene lamps erected on poles. It was necessary to engage lamplighters to take care of these lamps at a salary of $20 per month. A. L. Goss was the first person to officiate on this position and one of our present councilmen. F. J. Wertz served for a time in this capacity as a boy. The minutes further disclose the fact that numerous accidents happened to these lamps and almost every meeting of council ws featured with an account of broken lamps and bills tendered to the parties responsible for the damage. ****************************** |
